Japanese Idol

A Japanese idol (アイドル, aidoru?) is a celebrity who achieves widespread popularity and fame in Japan largely by virtue of their looks and propaganda techniques intended to work for them. The term usually refers to female performers in their teens and early twenties who are considered cute and pretty and achieve fame through publicity in the mass media. Male performers, such as Takuya Kimura and Masahiro Nakai (aka "Nakai-kun"), both from a singing group SMAP, are also commonly referred to (and refer to themselves as) "idols." Japanese idols are predominantly singers and actors, as well as models (in the case of females) for weekly men's magazines such as "Friday" and "Shūkan Gendai". Some of them may also appear as TV personalities (tarento).

An AV Idol (adult video idol; AV actress (AV女優, AV joyu?)) is a Japanese idol that works in the pornographic business, often both as an actress as well as a model as the video performances have a wide range, from just the idol strolling around their house doing chores in bikinis to hardcore porn. Since the dawn of the AV industry in the early 1980s, hundreds of AV idols have debuted every year, with an average career span of about a year, appearing in five or ten videos during that time.[1] Notable AV idols have careers spanning several years, have a high general public recognition, or make a significant impact on the industry in some other manner.

Gravure idols (グラビアアイドル, gurabia aidoru?) are Japanese models who often pose in bikinis and other provocative clothing for photo spreads in magazines aimed largely at men. They are known for their large breasts and suggestive poses. However, they do not pose nude or perform sexually explicit acts in their work. The term comes from photogravure, a type of printing process.

Recently there is also a trend of the increasing popularity of child gravure idol in Japan, some being as young as 10 years old.
